Canadian heritage and fashion trends By Denim Square

Canadian Heritage and Fashion Trends Come Together in Hbc's Canadian Olympic Team Uniforms for Torino 2006
Canada's Olympic Team at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games this February in Torino, Italy will be sporting uniforms designed and developed by Hudson's Bay Company (Hbc). The Hbc uniform package combines the best of fashion and function, with a distinct take on both Canadian heritage and modern, high tech, high performance winter sports wear.
The Canadian Olympic Team uniforms were unveiled today by Hbc and the Canadian Olympic Committee at the Fort York Armoury in Toronto at a gala celebration including Canadian Olympic athletes, guests and Hbc associates. The items seen for the first time at the event included team wear - items the athletes will wear during the 2006 Olympic Winter Games - as well as select replica wear items (the clothing line inspired by the athletes' uniforms that will be available to the public in Hbc stores across Canada). Special Olympic-themed boutiques will open this week in Hbc stores across the country, including the Bay, Zellers and Home Outfitters.
"The 2006 Olympic Winter Games are about great things - for our athletes, our country and now for Hbc," said George Heller, President and CEO, Hbc. "The Hbc team of designers has built a collection for the Canadian team representing us in Torino that captures the essence of Canada and will make us all proud when our athletes march into the stadium and climb onto the medal podium."
"These uniforms represent the pride Canadians feel for our Olympic athletes," said Chris Rudge, CEO, Canadian Olympic Committee. "They are attractive and functional, and will proudly showcase the Canadian team to the world at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games. We are very impressed with the 2006 Torino clothing line and the commitment Hbc has made to athletes for the next seven years."
The 2006 Canadian Olympic Team uniforms and replica wear were created by a team of Hbc designers supported by Canadian design consultants that were brought in to work on the program. The team also worked with Canadian Olympic athletes from across the country. Over 50 athletes participated in focus groups in Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto and Montreal and provided valuable feedback and suggestions that contributed to the goal of creating a team uniform package that exceeds the athletes' fashion and functional needs. A set of core values including diversity, pride, achievement and tradition were the inspiration and touchpoint for the design team throughout the creative process.
Canada's Olympic Team in Torino will receive over 45 items as part of the 2006 Team package including leisure wear, coats, indoor and outdoor jackets and pants, sweaters, shirts, shoes, toques, scarves and gloves. There will also be special athlete-only pieces such as the opening ceremony jacket, podium jacket, and a blazer that will not be available for sale. The distinctly Canadian designs for parade wear - the clothing worn in the Opening and Closing Ceremonies - and the clothing designed for the medal podium will only be unveiled at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games.
"We sought out the best in Canadian fashion and challenged our internal team of talented designers to come up with a line that mixes Canadian heritage with present day trends," said Suzanne Timmins, Fashion Director, Hbc. "From the latest fabrics to the cut and size ranges, our team considered everything."
"We knew when we struck our partnership with Hbc earlier this year that their first major challenge would be the design of the 2006 Canadian Team uniforms," said John Furlong, CEO, VANOC. "We put our faith in their ability to create a uniform that would instill national pride and become one of our athletes' most treasured memories of the Games. They have succeeded beyond our expectations on both counts. Congratulations, Hbc on a job well done."
Hbc is the Official Clothing and Luggage Supplier to the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Teams and the Official Department Store Partner and General Merchandise Retailer in Canada until 2012. Established in 1670, Hudson's Bay Company is Canada's largest department store retailer and oldest corporation. The Company provides Canadians with the widest selection of goods and services available through retail channels that include 550 stores led by the Bay, Zellers and Home Outfitters chains. The Canadian Olympic Committee is a national, private, not-for-profit organization committed to sport excellence. It is responsible for all aspects of Canada's involvement in the Olympic Movement, including Canada's participation in the Olympic and Pan American Games and a wide variety of programs that promote the Olympic Movement in Canada through cultural and educational means. For more information, see the COC website: www.olympic.ca.

Textile Technology Developments Amid Lifestyle Changes

Technological improvements in the last forty years of the 20th century included improved fabric technology and automated garment construction techniques.  Busy lifestyles, easier home laundering and workplace changes embracing dress down Fridays, have encouraged a more relaxed attitude to clothing in many situations.  Dress adapted to meet these needs.

Man Made Fibres and BlendsJulians Hill chemist.

Rayon, the regenerated fibre developed in the late Victorian era was joined by a new kind of fibre also man made, but totally synthesised from chemicals found in the petrol industry.  Synthetic fibres developed in the 1930s and 1940s, came into general use in the 1950s.  Polyamide (Nylon), Polyester, Polyacrylonitriles (Acrylics), Polyolefins and Polyurethanes (Spandex, and Lycra) were all the rage in the 1950s and 1960s.

Later combinations with natural fibres such as wool or cotton introduced the consumer to the concept of easy care fibre blends with a natural feel.  Polycotton garments and the reduced costs of wool and acrylic mixed knits encouraged people to discard clothes more easily as clothes sewn with speedier operations could also be produced faster at less cost.
Viscose rayon was courted again in the 1980s, when there was the start of a reaction against synthetic fibres.  Viscose crinkle fabrics and fabrics with exceptional drape or sheer effects wooed the consumer back.
By 2000 designers had caught on to adding Lycra or Spandex to fibres like viscose and acetate and created garments with great comfort and better shape retention in wear.
Chemists concentrated in improving all the man made fibres and by the 1980s, new variations which produced luxury look fabrics hit the marketplace.  These improvements in fibre manufacture continue today and the buzzword for the 1990s was microfibres.

Actress Brittany Murphy Dies at 32

Actress Brittany Murphy was found dead on Sunday, TMZ and other media outlets have confirmed. The 'Clueless' and 'Girl, Interrupted' actress went into full cardiac arrest, and paramedics were unable to revive her. She was pronounced dead upon arrival at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

The 911 call reporting the incident was made from the home of Simon Monjack, whom Murphy married in 2007. RadarOnline is reporting that Monjack himself made the phone call, and that the Los Angeles Coroner's office is launching an investigation into Murphy's death. The police "could not say whether it would point to any criminal conduct," Los Angeles Times sources say.

According to TMZ, Murphy's mom found the actress in the shower and paramedics administered CPR at the home and on the way to the hospital. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Devon Gale tells the Associated Press that the call was made at 8 a.m. on Sunday, and that one person was transported to a hospital.

Murphy's publicist, Nicole Perna, released a statement on Sunday saying: "In this time of sadness, the family thanks you for your love and support. It is their wish that you respect their privacy."

Murphy made her big splash in Hollywood in 1995's 'Clueless,' in which she played the ditzy character Tai. She went on to co-star in popular films like 'Girl, Interrupted' with Angelina Jolie and '8 Mile,' where she played Eminem's love interest. She was also the voice of Luanne Platter for more than 230 episodes of the popular Fox cartoon sitcom 'King of the Hill.'

Aside from acting, Murphy also dabbled in music occasionally. In 2006, she scored a hit by pairing up with DJ Paul Oakenfold on the song 'Faster Kill Pussycat,' which became a club staple. She also covered two songs -- including Queen's 'Somebody to Love' -- in the animated movie 'Happy Feet.'

Ashton Kutcher, who shared the screen with Murphy in 2003's 'Just Married' and also dated her, spoke out on his Twitter to remember his friend. "See you on the other side kid ... 2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany's family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.

Publicist Ashley Berg, a partner at LFB Media Group who saw Murphy just two weeks ago at an event to raise money for disabled children, tells PopEater's Rob Shuter that the actress "was happy and totally upbeat at the event."

According to the Associated Press, detectives and coroner's officials were at Murphy and Monjack's home Sunday afternoon but did not talk to reporters.
Neighbor Clare Staples told the AP said she saw firefighters working to resuscitate the actress Sunday morning. She said Murphy was on a stretcher and "looked as though she was dead at the scene."
Murphy's husband, wearing pajama bottoms and no shoes, appeared "dazed" as firefighters tried to save her, Staples said.

Splitsville: Beyonce's Mom Files For Divorce

Beyonce's mom Tina Knowles filed for divorce from Mathew Knowles.
Tina (full name Celestine Knowles) filed for divorce from her husband of 29 years on Nov. 11, 2009 in Harris County, Texas.
The marriage between the 55-year-old stylist/fashion designer and the 58-year-old music mogul has had its share of controversy in recent years amid rumors of Mathew's infidelity.
In October, TMZ reported that Mathew was slapped with a paternity suit by a woman named Alexsandra Wright.

Wright, a 30-something marketing executive who Mathew alleged scored a short-lived job at Interscope Records while his daughter Solange was signed there, is currently eight months pregnant.
A rep for Music World Entertainment did not respond to a request for comment at press time.

Peter Morrissey's Bingle bungle

Morrissey has never been one to miss a photo op - well, except for those two years now that's he declined to show on Fashion Week's runways. But he told me that after Lara's bloody brouhaha hit the headlines, he realised they were both from Yowie Bay and looked her up.
So what of the magic moments from yesterday? Problem was, they were thin on the ground - certainly none had popped by my deadline last night.
Gail Sorronda really stood out in the group shows but she should do a solo show next time around if she can manage it. You can have an endless series of pretty frocks and snappy tailoring, but Fashion Weeks are all about what us fashion folk commonly refer to as "fashion moments".
The dresses in Aurelio Costarella's show, which unfortunately I missed while writing today's story, did look absolutely beautiful in the photos - I saw the entire collection once I finally arrived home, at about 10.30pm.
So yes, I stand corrected on the show timing front. Although things weren't auguring well after the Akira show delay, somehow Fashion Week got back on time. I must say it's the first time in 11 years that shows have started so close to the advertised times.
I was running to one show as the doors were about to close - and it was 10 minutes past schedule. Maybe they took a few leaves out of the Kiwis' show books. Their shows run like clockwork. The head of NZ Fashion Week, Pieter Stewart, is one very chic sargeant major.
This morning I'll be at Icebergs down in Bondi for the Kirrily Johnston show at 9am. Great location for a show, especially for any internationals who are new to this town. Like Costarella, Johnston also just keeps getting better, so looking forward to it.
Just to answer a couple of blog questions. Sorry for the delay. Someone asked if Milich & Morton are showing. Not this year. They have however just opened their first boutique at 12 Glenmore Road, Paddington. Just at the Glenmore Road/Oxford Street intersection there. For anyone unfamiliar with Sydney's retail hangs, this area has become a hip new hotspot. Lots of boutiques (from Sass & Bide's first freestanding store to Kiwi label World to Scanlan & Theodore and Tsubi).
Someone also asked about Tight Knickers. It's a brand, dude (www.denimsquare.com). But I'm sure that wasn't the answer you were hoping for.
Finally, we've been recording some shows on video. Click here for the Caravana show and an interview with the designers.

Ashley Green at her Maxim issue celebration

Ashley Green is shown here at the celebration of the December edition of Maxim Magazine, She appears in it and I’m sure it’s going to be a nice spread. I love the top picture of her looking back, is as if she asking me to bed with that look. Notice how she is a bigger star than that Kristen Stewart? Yes because this girl is hot and Kristen Stewart looks like a girl that should be working at a supermarket cleaning the aisles. Why am I making the comparison? Because they are in a movie together call Twilight and the ugly one has the main part in it, that bothers me if you haven’t notice.
