In Over My Head

Sophomore year I landed an internship at Ocean Magazine as an Editorial Intern. I was so psyched because I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything fashion and being in that industry was something I've dreamed about. My next internship was again in the editorial field as Online Editor Intern for Coast Magazine. This was the perfect opportunity for me to write my own articles, which happened to be posted on their online website. I mean it wasn't exactly material from my own mind, but the basic ideas were mine such as articles about OC related: holiday happenings, perfect winter coats, non-profit organizations, and travel opportunities.
Even though I'm a Business Economics major here at UCI, I still find myself at a stand still. In my Labor Economics course this morning, the topic of where we see ourselves in the future came up. Everyone in my class being the same major as I said business/finance related fields. While this was happening, as I was thinking about was, "I want to be a broadcast journalist."
This feeling of utter confusion suddenly came upon me where I'm questioning where am I going in life? Am I pursuing the right fields? Will my internships actually pay off? Who am I to think I'd actually make it into the media industry?
I just know that my dreams are extraordinary, something alot of people only dream about doing and never coming close to it. I just want to keep working toward my dream so that I could be the person I really want to be. I have so many aspirations and broadcasting and journalism are just a few of them. Is money or happiness more important? This is a question I ask myself while I'm in class. I can two choices: the money route and the happiness route. I know with my degree in Business Economics, there are so many opportunities to make money. I was even pondering the idea of becoming a Financial Analyst, since I know that if I was ever going to pursue a career in my degree, it would have to be a job involved with money. The happiness route earns me a meager starting salary, but an increasing salary over time. But following this path would actually be something I want to do - therefore I would succeed more in this area since I'm so passionate about it.
For the meantime, all I can do in the present is just keep on pursuing my degree while pursuing my dream. Who says you can't do both things at the same time right?

Lorene Scafaria: Adam Brody's New Girlfriend!

The new girl Adam Brody has been hanging out with lately is talented screenwriter Lorene Scafaria, JustJared.com can exclusively reveal.
Lorene (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist) is part of “The Fempire,” which is a screenwriting trio that also includes Diablo Cody (Juno, Jennifer’s Body) and Dana Fox (What Happens in Vegas). These screenwriting BFFs write together in the same room and bounce ideas off each other.
It’s likely that Adam and Lorene met on the set of 2008’s Jennifer’s Body, which starred Adam. “Jennifer’s Body [is] easily (and unbiasedly) in my top five of the year,” Lorene, who is also a singer/songwriter, has said. Next up for Lorene is Man and Wife, the story of an immigration officer.
Adam and Lorene were first publicly spotted together in November 2009 on the New York set of his new movie, The Romantics. They also passed through LAX airport together in Los Angeles on Sunday (February 21).
Adam split with his O.C. co-star Rachel Bilson in late 2006.
FYI: Hilarious tweet from Lorene yesterday: “Birthday gift shopping spree at the Pleasure Chest. Told my friend to think of me every time she uses it… I mean, them… I mean…”

Are Long Distance Relationships Worth the Time?

Whenever I happen to be in a serious relationship, they always end up being long distance. From high school, to before college, to now I cannot say I've had a relationship where I would see my boyfriend on a daily basis. Of course there would be spurts of time, but never really consistently. Out of all the relationships I have had in my past, I am in the toughest situation right now...talk about a long distance relationship with someone thousands of miles away!!! But what I've come to realize is that it is possible to make it work. When two people really care for each other, then the impact of long distance is just another challenge to the relationship. There are certainly ways to communicate...Thank You SKYPE!!!, as well as long distance plans, email, aim, facebook.
I honestly thought I'd be so miserable now and though I feel that at times, I believe that person is worth the wait. It can make the relationship stronger, making you appreciate the little things about that other person.
There should be no excuses about how long distance relationships never work, because if you truly wanted them to, it's up to you to make it happen - not the stars people. If you have thoughts on cheating then you should just consider why your even in a relationship.
Long distance relationships really help you focus on what you really want sometimes instead of that other person. It's not thinking selfishly necessarily, but instead of investing time everyday to spend time with them, you actually have time to yourself and focus on your goals.
Being in a long distance relationship is hard, and it requires a great commitment from both parties, but in the end if you truly care for that person it's a great investment.

Why China Should Not Be Seen As A Threat

For my International Relations of East Asia midterm, each team was given a topic to debate on. I had to defend that China's rapid expansion should not be seen as a threat. Though initially I believed the total opposite, researching on the issue made me believe my own argument. Check out what I said in my debate and if you'd like to add anything, I'd love to hear about it. This particular argument is how China is Defensive, not Expansionist.

-China was not always a powerful country. After the First Opium War, China could not win against any of the industrialized powers, leaving them feeling taken advantage of due to their weakness. China is thereby defensive for the motivation to get rich and wanting to seek just enough defensive power to survive. -Due to the power transition thesis: when you have a rising power such as China, you often see conflict. Because the United States have always been #1 in power, China’s expansion in such a short amount of time is seen as a threat.-With power comes an outdoing of sorts: security dilemma: 2 countries have no interest in conquering one another. Being that China is not advanced, China became defensive when the United States sold technologically advanced weapons to Taiwan, therefore supporting Taiwan’s independence from China, a property that is rightfully theirs.

Taiwan:

-China’s fundamental defense posture has been designed to deal with ‘local wars’ along its borders, especially its maritime area. To attain capabilities beyond that will require long-term military modernization that will not be completed for some years to come. China’s neighbors have not interpreted its current military buildup as having a necessarily aggressive design toward the region.-China military exercises in the Taiwan straits in 1995 and early 1996 demonstrated its determination to prevent Taiwan from breaking away. Taiwan is a rightful property of China.

Korean War Involvement:

-The US supplied military arms and training to the KMT to help defeat the CCP. Americans aided two million dollars to Nationalists between 1945-1948. -“China intervened in the Korean War in October 1950 as UN troops reached the Sino-Korean border and pushed them back to the thirty-eighth parallel. The conflict led Washington in defense of Taiwan.- After 2 years of negotiations a truce was finally signed on July 27, 1953. Since then the Chinese have withdrawn their forces in 1958, but the United States has continued to maintain nearly twenty-five thousand or more troops on the peninsula to this day.

-China has not mentioned plans of expanding. Their limited changes to the status quo include: the reintegration of Taiwan with the mainland, modification over disputed borders, and claims to portions of the South China Sea. Additionally, the United States and China have different spheres of influence that do not overlap, making China see no need in going to war.-China is defense oriented: they have the world’s largest standing army, but all their weapons, force, and military will not be used unless provoked. The reason why China sought in possessing nuclear bombs was for the purpose of deterring a nuclear attack. China would never use nuclear weapons first. -Additionally, their defense in divided in primary functions. First, is to deter a superpower attack seen with China’s involvement in the Korean War. Second is to defend China’s land from territories that are rightfully theirs such as the Sino-Indian border war and Sino-Soviet border dispute. Third is to continue China’s regional stability of power such as the 1979 Sino-Vietnam border war. China’s goal is to agree upon peaceful means before any force is involved.

Here's Some Stuff to Add to my Portfolio

Sexting: The New Phenomena

Camille Mendez

The term speaks for itself: sexting: the act of sending sexually explicit photos or messages through phone or computer. Though this problem is focused more on high school students who are under the age of 18, it applies just as much to college students. Sexting is not seen as a big deal amongst college students in a world independent under parent supervision.
College is seen as a sort of experiment to not only prepare for your future, but learn the true you. With the endless parties available to college students, there is the opportunity to meet others, especially the opposite sex. One "fun" night, can lead to a whole list of text messages from people you met at the previous occasion, thus leading into a text relationship with a stranger you met from that social function. Many college students like exploring new boundaries not only when it comes to their own abilities, but somehow to be a risk taker in seeing what they can get away with.
Sexting provides an outlet to lay all of your fantasies out on the table. MTVnews reports that: "68% people say things over sexting that they wouldn't say in person." This technological medium provides an alter ego to the real you, one who likes to explore forbidden territory. Though most cases of sexting are not reported, the act can be a serious federal offense, especially when minors are involved. 3 in 10 young people are involved in sexting, meaning many people do it, just that you don't hear about it because it's seen as an accepted practice.
What you may have not considered is that sexting can be very dangerous. Here are some hard statistics found on www.athinline.org: 29% of young people have been involved in some kind of sexting, 1 in 5 sextants forward the pics to other people, more than 50% of those who shared a sext shared it with multiple people, sexters are 4 times as likely to consider committing suicide.
The main targets in this situation are women. The main reason why many women feel compelled to sext is for the need to feel wanted more. If a guy asks for a sexually explicit photo, they take the time into wanting the picture to look good for the recipient. What doesn't register to many people is that any technology sent can be almost impossible to retrieve. Everyday sext pictures are sold to internet accounts to feed underground websites. As technology's expansion is seen as a great innovation, there are many counter effects as well. Phone companies have the rights to your phone's database, meaning they can track provocative pictures sent to other phones. It is difficult to consider something that so personalized as a phone can have consequences against you.
When asked if the student sexted, students who all preferred to remain anonymous first smirked, then admitted that they do in fact sext and see no harm in doing it. Sexting to them was seen as a fun game, to explore one's options in college, while others viewed it as a necessity in committed relationships, especially those involved in long distance. Those particular students said that sexting makes it easier to remain committed in a relationship and keeps the "spark"
alive from miles away.
While this may seem logical, many young people need to know there are precautions you should take before you sext, and that a sext can bring many unrepaired damages that can affect someone for the long run. Just like each individual, technology is not perfect and mistakes can happen.
Some word of advice from Parry Aftab, Internet Privacy Lawyer states, "You should deleted the sext right after you get it." Even though this seems illogical, its better to dispose of the evidence before anyone else gets their hands on it. Possible outcomes gone array can be a bad reputation, rejection from ones you really care about, emotional distress from humiliation, or being accused of a federal crime and listed as a registered sex offender when minors especially are involved.
On the website www.athinline.org, there is more information about sexting such as 3 questions to ask yourself before you sext: "Was this my idea?", "Where will this picture end up?", and "What was going on when the pic was taken?" If in any way you feel pressured into sexting, simply don't give in especially if it's for the purpose of impressing someone, or keeping someone around longer. Self respect plays a key role into those that do sext and those that don't. Debra Goldstein, co-author of Flirtexting recommends practicing safe sext: "Less is more, send something funny like an elbow or a Victoria Secret model to keep the relationship on a fun, yet more enticing level." The opposite sex is more likely to respect you more and may consider to keep you around in the long run since they see that you respect
yourself as well.

Can Online Dating Be Considered Racial Profiling?

Camille Mendez

With the innovation of new technologies, there has been a great emergence of online dating sites. Those who subscribe to these sites tend to favor race preferences similar to their kind. UC Irvine sociologist Cynthia Feliciano says, "Internet dating offers a unique lens through which to understand the process of selecting a partner and how race plays into the selection.” According to studies done by Cynthia Feliciano and Belinda Robnett, they discovered that white men preferred Asian or Latino women instead of African Americans, while white women did not prefer Asian men. “Studies point to increasingly tolerant attitudes about interracial relationships, but intermarriage rates remain relatively low,” Feliciano states.
Most biases are apparent in certain races more than others. While all races claim that they wouldn’t mind dating outside their race, the deal is there are factors that influence a person’s decision when it comes to dating, marriage, or just hooking up. The common biases include that Asian women are hypersexual, Black women are bossy, Asian men are not masculine enough, Black men are lazy, and that white women are status oriented. What all races did seem to agree on was their preference to date a white man, a race seen superior to the others, most likely due to social status in the economy.
Recent studies by researchers at UCI’S own Yahoo! Personals dating service further points out racial preference statistics on apimovement.com: “In the UCI study, of women who expressed a racial preference (73%) on Yahoo, less than 10% would bother to respond to overtures from men of Asian descent, particularly East Indians, somewhat behind Black and Latino Men. White women in particular were particularly exclusive (racist). 64% of those with a racial preference checked whites only (93% excluded Asian men). In other words, nearly one out of two white women wanted to date only whites. About 3 out of 5 men expressed a racial preference. Nearly half selected Asian women, compared with 7% selecting Black women. Men of all races will avoid black women, and all races had a degree of racial bias in terms of dating.”
Through dating sites there has been an apparent double standard that specifically caters to racial preferences. When keywords “interracial dating site” are entered into any internet search engine, the results reveal numerous websites that cater to people who have particular racial preferences.
Having an online profile gives the user the ability to state their race preference not because they are racist in any ways, but simply because they think the compatibility would match for the long run. A lot of dating choices have to do with how certain races are portrayed in the media that carries to your outlook on life. Yahoo! Personals gives some obstacles of interracial dating as well as the methods to overcome them.
1. The Traditionalists: Races who exclusively date the same races for a common cultural foundation. Resolution: Surround yourself with a diverse group of people. This opens your point of view to additional outlooks on life as well as establishing a connection with other races.
2. Stereotypes from Mass Media: The public easily absorbs over-generalized images of different ethnicities and how they interact.
Resolution: Try not to let the media influence stereotypes portrayed and instead focus on your personal opinions.
3. Offensive Family Member: Racial “jokes” add tension that makes you think twice about dating outside your own race.
Resolution: Prepare for confrontations and think of persuasive ways to respond to demand respect in your dating decision.
4. The Gazers: People who blatantly stare at interracial couples.
Resolution: Instead of assuming the attention is a bad thing, bask in it. Their opinions shouldn’t matter to you or your date.

My Passion

hEY tHERE!!! i'M Camille :D

I finally have my own personal blog!!!! You know, when I have something in my set, I'm not satisfied until I make it happen. Today I've had the urge to just write and create my blog with the encouragement of so many people who support me. Having journalism be my passion is a newfound discovery that I feel has truly driven me to succeed in life.
Being able to see my articles posted online or in the newspaper is so inspiring and I hope that my writing can inspire others. Writing gives you so much leeway to express your mind, it feels exhiliarating really.
This week, I have come to realize my strength and my support system. Having such a competitive dream of being a broadcast journalist, I have come through so much support that has been so inspiring and heartwarming. It's great to see people take notice of writing abilities and congratulate me on my success.
Besides my parents, I would like to give a quick shout out to my journalism teacher Ricardo Chavira and my Uncle Alex. My teacher has believed in me since the day I took his class and talked to him about how I see myself in the future. From my second year in college to now, he has been sending me great internship opportunities for me to apply to that will help further my journalism career. My Uncle Alex has also believed in me since Day 1 and has introduced me to many people in the media industry. His words of encouragement truly keep me going and I'm so grateful that he's always thinking of ways to further my career - whether it be photo shoots, or media events, he always puts me in a situation to accomplish my goal.
My parents are so great. Even though our family is not perfect, I don't know what I would do without them. They have supported me ever since I was little and see big dreams for me. I know that broadcast journalism is not an easy path to follow, but I know I can do it and I will.
This blog is kind of blah I know, but this is just an intro, more to comeee!!!
