SPICE GIRLS TURNED MUSICAL
In the 90s, there was no beating the Spice Girls. This girl group was on top of their game for awhile! I remember first hearing about them in second grade, and I became such a big fan of them. I mean I had so many of their merchandise from the dolls, pictures, posters, lollipops to watching their movie in theatres about 5 times, to even auditioning for the talent show to their song "Too Much". When Geri Halliwell left the group, I knew the Spice Girls could never be the same without all 5 of them together again.
I am happy now to say that the Spice Girls have been reunited...for their new musical at least. Though none of them star in it, it is a musical based out in London featuring their songs. Introducing Viva Forever!, written by British comedian Jennifer Saunders and produced by Judy Craymer who also produced Mamma Mia! But Viva Forever! is opening later this year, December 11 to the public at the Picadilly in London's West End.
Melanie Chisholm aka "Sporty Spice" said “I don’t think it took (us) any convincing at all. It’s something we’ve spoken about a lot over the years. I think that our music lends itself really well to theatre and when we reunited in 2007 that was when we started to talk about it more seriously.”
Victoria Beckham aka "Posh Spice" added, “We always said if we do this we want to work with the best people, because that’s what we’ve always done. Everything we’ve done we’ve done properly and we’ve got the ‘A-team.’ As much as we’ve written the songs, we also didn’t want to creatively stifle Judy and Jennifer. So, somewhat, we have let them do what they do. Their success speaks for themselves. We really gave them the freedom to do their thing. We had a lot of faith in them. We talked about girl power for a long long time and we’re hoping to introduce a whole new generation. What we do individually as well is empower women and it’s fun – we want to have fun and we’re excited.”
Geri Halliwell aka "Ginger Spice" said “It’s not about actually us, it’s the essence of the Spice Girls. There is a talent show in there, but actually, really what it’s about is friendship, it’s about motherhood and then there is a little bit on how you juggle between success and friendship.”
Viva Forever! therefore captures the essence of the Spice Girls, not the group's rise to fame exactly. But it does capture their famous songs we have known to love such as Wannabe, Spice Up Your Life, and of course Viva Forever. Nonetheless I was very excited to hear this news about my favorite girl band back in the day! I hope they start doing a worldwide tour of the production because this is something I'd definitely check out! Also on a side note: these women look absolutely fabulous still!
GIRL POWER!!!
