The Grammy Awards are the most prestigious awards in the music industry and in that respect are rather akin to the Academy Awards or the Oscars for movies or the Emmy Awards for television. Coming in to the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards, artists like Eminem, Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber were widely expected to win in most categories.
At the end of the day however, Eminem who was nominated in ten categories but only won two awards (Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance) while Lady Gaga who had six nominations came away with three awards.
Surprisingly, the country trio Lady Antebellum took home five awards as they won in the top Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Country Album, Best Country Song and Best Country Performance by a duo or a group.
Other big surprises were wins for Arcade Fire in the album of the year category for their album The Suburbs and Esperanza Spalding won in the Best New Artist category beating off competition from the likes of Justin Bieber, Drake and Florence + The Machine.
The performances on the other hand were largely over the top with Lady Gaga being "born" from an egg to perform her new single and a glitzy tribute to Aretha Franklin who's currently suffering from an undisclosed ailment. Mick Jagger and Barbra Streisand also had performances while Cee-Lo performed a child safe version of his song "F--- You" backed by The Muppets.
There were also performances by Rihanna, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Bruno Mars, Usher, Miranda Lambert, Norah Jones and John Mayer among others.
